Accessibility

I want everyone to be able to use this site, whatever device they use and however they use it. Here is what it supports, what doesn’t work well yet, and how to tell me if something doesn’t work for you.

About this page: It covers every page of this site, in all three languages. The checks it describes are the site’s own: no outside organization has audited it.

The cells wanted a sign that says "everyone is welcome here", so they made a ring with every color in it and drew a figure in the middle, its arms wide open. One cell asked who the figure was meant to be. "Anyone," said the others. "Someone who listens to the page, someone who uses only the keyboard, someone who needs the words bigger, someone reading in another language, someone holding a baby in one arm." Nobody was left outside the ring, and that was the whole idea.

What the site supports

  • The keyboard: every link, button and activity works with the keyboard alone, a clear ring shows where you are, and a link at the top skips straight to the content.
  • Screen readers: headings and landmarks show how each page is built, the pictures have names, and the activities, quizzes and tutorials say what changes as you use them.
  • Your device’s settings: the site follows your light or dark theme (or you can choose one), stops its moving pictures when you ask for less motion, and keeps its sound effects off until you turn them on.
  • Zoom and text size: you can zoom in or make the text larger, and on a narrow screen nothing needs scrolling sideways.
  • Contrast and color: all text is easy to tell from its background, and the site never relies on color alone to show what something means.
  • Three languages: English, Persian and Arabic, each with its own direction and digits, and words in another language are marked so that screen readers say them correctly.
  • Without JavaScript: every page can still be read.

How it is checked

The site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2) at level AA. Before every release, automated checks test every page in all three languages, in both themes and at phone and computer sizes, and I review every change before it goes live.

What doesn’t work well yet

  • Many links lead to other sites, such as publishers and official bodies. I don’t control them, and some of their pages and documents may be hard to use with assistive technology.
  • The drawings in the activities and tutorials are explained in their text, but some details may still be easier to see than to hear.
